How to get a Google Map API key

Before you can create a Google Map API key, you must have:

  1. Google Account
  2. Google Cloud Platform Account
  3. Google Cloud Platform Billing Account

How to Create a Google Map API key

Step 1: Enable API Library

  1. Navigate to "The Google Cloud Platform API Libary - Maps Category"
  2. If you only have one project in your organisation then the default project will be selected
  3. If you have multiple projects then please select the relevant project for this Google Map API key
  4. Select the relevant API Library
    Tip: Your Great Minds implementation consultant will instruct you on the API Libraries required for your implementation
  5. Select Enable
  6. Click on the back arrow button to go back to the categories if multiple API Libraries are required

Step 2: Create API Key

  1. Navigate to "Google Cloud Platform API credentials"
  2. Select "+ Create Credentials"
  3. Select "API Key"
  4. Copy the API Key that has been generated for you and provide this to your Great Minds implementation consultant

Restrict API Key

  1. Navigate to "Google Cloud Platform API credentials"
  2. Select the API Key
    Tip: use the date or click on show key to make sure you are selecting the right key
    Tip: There are two ways to restrict the API Key you have generated
    1. Application Restrictions: An application restriction controls which websites, IP addresses, or applications can use your API key. You can set one application restriction per key.
    2. API Restrictions: API restrictions specify the enabled APIs that this key can call
  3. Restrict the API Key and click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
